Green Level Homes is the product of a HUD 811 grant, and will result in the construction of six two-bedroom apartments on Green Level Road in Cary, North Carolina for adults with developmental disabilities. The Serving Cup is partnering with Lutheran Family Services and the Arc of North Carolina in order to provide Supportive Services for the residents of Green Level Homes. Construction is estimated to begin in the summer of 2007. Keep checking the News page for more information on the project's progress.

Green Level Homes will provide practical solutions to achieve independent living and economic empowerment for persons who currently do not have access to affordable independent living apartments.
Persons with developmental disabilities who are currently living in either group homes, rest homes/family care homes, state developmental disability/mental retardation centers, or in a dependent living situation with family members, do not have access to exercise their capabilities to achieve independent living.
The apartments on Green Level Road will provide a setting that will enable these residents to become self-sufficient in independent living skills, with the help and assistance of supportive services offered through the Wake County Human Services Developmental Disabilities Services network of endorsed providers.
The project's proximity to an adjacent shopping center will allow the residents to walk to the grocery store, the drug store, banks, shops, and restaurants. Supportive services skills training will provide a practical solution to help the residents learn skills of independent living which they may not have had an opportunity to acquire.

There are a number of ways to become involved in the Green Level Homes community. Contact our Volunteer Coordinator (volunteer@servingcup.org) for more information. Below are just a few opportunities for service:
- Start or join a Support Team in order to help residents establish roots in the area, ease their transition into independent living, and to provide interactions beyond their past living experiences.
- Be a Special Event Coordinator, and plan a group event/outing for Green Level Homes residents two times per year.
- Help residents move into their new homes.
- Donate furniture, and/or help residents furnish their apartments.
- Help organize Welcome Baskets for residents; organize a collection of necessary household goods to make new residents feel welcome in their new apartments.

Convenient, affordable housing with supportive services will benefit residents with developmental disabilities by providing a stable living environment in the least restrictive setting and allowing them employment and educational opportunities.
The ability to live affordably in a safe and secure environment while acquiring and maintaining skills necessary to live independently are the main benefit to residents of the Serving Cup Apartments. With incomes extremely low due to the disabling effects of developmental disabilities, many developmentally disabled persons cannot afford basic shelter and need the structure of a supportive case management process to maintain their health and to effectively manage daily living tasks.
"Normalization" and "integration" are key concepts to assisting persons who are developmentally disabled to fully function at the highest level of independence in the least restrictive environment appropriate for their disability. The opportunity to be neighbors and socialize with other persons, both persons without and persons with disabilities, will be the chief benefit enjoyed by residents of Green Level Homes.

To Achieve Independent Living
Supportive services skills training will provide a practical solution to help the residents learn skills of independent living which they may not have had an opportunity to acquire. These might include:
- How to budget one's monthly income to cover rent, food, and other expenses.
- How to plan meals, shop for food, cook, serve, and store food and left-overs. Personal assistants may be needed for one-on-one help as residents learn to master these independent living skills.
- How to develop a plan for housekeeping, including listing the tasks that need to be done on a routine or periodic basis; establishing a list of supplies and equipment needed; budgeting for acquisition of housekeeping supplies and equipment. Some residents may need to access personal assistants to help them with learning the tasks of housekeeping and for chore services assistants for tasks that residents may not be able to perform because of their disability.
- How to care for yard and garden, including lawn maintenance, plantings that require minimum irrigation and care.
- How to access transportation systems to travel to locations where services, employment, or recreation and leisure activities take place.
To Achieve Economic Empowerment
Residents of Green Level Homes will be encouraged to engage in pre-vocational training, vocational training, sheltered employment or supported employment, depending on the extent of their disability. Practical solutions toward achieving economic empowerment also include the acquisition of skills that make maximum use of the financial resources that are available, as well as working toward increasing financial resources. Case management services will assist residents to access the following practical solutions to achieve economic empowerment:
- Education and training in budgeting, wise shopping and planning for future expenditures.
- For residents who are in vocational training and supportive employment programs, education and training in the importance of time management skills, good work habits, and self-advocacy in the workplace.
- Encouragement of saving for future goals, including helping residents establish banking relations with checking and savings accounts, empowering residents to be in control of their own economic resources.
- Encouraging all residents in the project to come up with ways that they can economize by saving and cooperating in purchase of goods and services/supplies that each need.
- Encouraging residents to establish Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) through which they can see their savings grow and be matched by local governments through CDBG programs. The Serving Cup will seek to raise funds to also match residents' savings programs.
- Offering a mentor relationship to tenants who would like a volunteer from the Serving Cup to help with career decisions and financial education issues.

Green Level Homes will benefit the community by enhancing its makeup to include a diverse population.
By providing affordable, safe, decent and supportive housing for people who are developmentally disabled, the community benefits by alleviating homelessness, providing appropriate care and shelter for its citizens, and allowing all citizens the opportunity to strive for their personal best through employment and education.
The convenient location of the Green Level Homes, combined with the supportive services offered by staff and volunteers, will provide many opportunities for residents to be active and involved in the community. Community members can help and support the residents by including them in activities just as they would other citizens of the town.
The economic benefit to the larger community are significant, as the cost of providing independent living apartments with supportive services saved taxpayer funds compared to the cost of institutional care. In addition, many residents will acquire the skills to be able to secure part-time or full-time employment, adding to the economic viability of the community.
