Wake County's population has grown at a very rapid rate, and public transportation has not been able to keep up. Individuals living outside the city limits often require the use of an automobile to get to their places of employment, and for shopping, church, or socializing. Transportation vouchers and services are often available only during regular business hours and not on weekends.

Most people with developmental disabilities are unable to drive or do not have a car. In Wake County alone, hundreds of people with developmental disabilities are unable to get to work or to maintain a job, go to the grocery store or the doctor's office, and even fewer have a chance to socialize, because they do not have adequate and reliable transportation.
This problem is a major one in their lives, one that definitely worsens their isolation and exclusion from the community.
It is the plan of the Serving Cup to:
-
Create a network of volunteers in Wake County who are able to provide transportation to regularly scheduled events, and for occasional destinations.
-
Lobby Wake County officials to create a transportation service for seniors and people with disabilities, providing access daytime, evenings, and weekends.
