About Us

Established in 2000, The Serving Cup is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports adults with special needs.  Based in Raleigh, NC, we support the expansion of housing/supported living opportunities and community resources/connections across the country.

An all-volunteer organization, our mission is to support the development of social activities, community resources, and affordable housing opportunities for adults with special needs.

History of The Serving Cup

The Serving Cup started in January 2000 as a natural outgrowth of the Coffeehouse at Good Shepherd in Raleigh, NC, a program set up to provide socialization opportunities for adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD).  As volunteers at the Coffeehouse got to know attendees, it didn’t take long for organizers to realize that a lot more could be done to help this community.  The Serving Cup, established as a non-profit 501(c)3, began its journey of replicating the Coffeehouse program and also venturing into creating supported independent housing opportunities for adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD). The Serving Cup was instrumental in completing housing projects at Green Level and Building Independence, two supported living residences in North Carolina.
